Artists face forced Eviction of STOP in Porto, the largest DIY Studio complex in Europe
For over 10 days, 500 musicians in Porto have been evicted from their workspace, with over 100 rehearsal rooms closed down in the STOP Shopping Center, located in the city center, in what has been called the largest DIY Studio complex in Europe
Outraged, they called for a demonstration attended by thousands of people, artists, and cultural agents in Porto and Lisbon, recognizing the importance of this community for Portuguese culture.
The peak season for concerts is during the summer, and most of these professionals need their workspace to prepare, store their materials, etc.
The mayor of Porto, who is also the city’s cultural councilor, fails to understand the disruption it is causing in the lives of hundreds of workers and their families, as well as in the cultural activity of the community as a whole.
Porto has undergone significant changes in recent years under its political management, losing its identity and losing thousands of inhabitants due to the housing crisis. Furthermore, its administration is being investigated for real estate speculation activities and favoring economic interests.
Now, the countless number of creators and technicians who have passed through the STOP Shopping Center in the last decades join forces with these 500 musicians, and in unison with their neighborhood and city, they will not allow themselves to be turned into new victims of ambition and profit.
7000+ people marched in defense of culture as STOP, a collective working space in Porto, serving 500 artists, was evicted on the 18th of July.
Official news media (and police) reported 1.5 thousand people, but the organization believes we were somewhere between 5 to 7 thousand people on the street.

The chaos erupted earlier this week, when a police opperation reminiscent of the ones for the “war on drugs”, a much larger and deadly matter, with 200+ “opperations” in the last months, with heavily armed gendarme, represses the neighbouhoods of the city.

At 22:30, the police wanted to re-open the street. Clearly, people were in the street, so the police sent 8 motorcicles and then a city “trash cleaner” truck came. The people were calm, but said clearly that in a way, they didnt like it. Reminiscent of struggles of the city, were people chanted “O Porto é nosso” , “A cidade é nossa” The city is ours, and will be until we die.
This forced eviction “despejo”, of Centro Comercial Stop, has sent shockwaves across the region. due to media coverage, the city hall is backing up, while experimenting new forms of social control.
Meanwhile, the city is in a war like state.

As to anything that may be reported as fire, there was no fire, the firefighters went to an air-conditioner and applied a red can of firestopper for 7 seconds. then the hole comitive left. the police seemed “not aware” of the situation at all.
Very important to note that no apparent motive has been given as to why any of these public “agencies” have behaved like this…
The firefigters were put by politians on high alert, on a meeting that happened precisely during the protest, because of STOP’s “fire risk”. but in the end, they went at midnight in a huge and first reponse opperation, to the police station instead…
The police station ( which had a small fire going in their balcony, a couple papers were apparently thrown) but the motive for such a large intervention is that the city hall, in trying to deviate our capacity to see that they are in fact, doing these actions, like selling the whole neighbourhood, in a “constest” of “ideas” and accepting a poor idea, out of only three(!)?(!) put the firefighters on extremely high alert, on that same day. Because for years they say that STOP is prone to fire, and they want to “avoid a catastrophe”.
So it was really fun when three huge fire trucks and several ambulances were coming to raid the police station!
As to why it is happening, it’s being called speculation, traffic in nfluence, and lots of money. artists are the tip of the iceberg, in what may well become a huge scandall in the city.
The plans are public, they want to sell the neighbourhood for €45M+, an architecture project has been approved. Now they axpected the artists to just accept being kicked out, but the fight has just started.
Already a series of scandals has been erupting, with the president of one of the artists association being called out for selling the artists to power. Its all part of a larger scheme to make the huge multimillion euro project happen, and kick out the punks

Artistas enfrentam despejo forçado do STOP no Porto, o maior complexo de Estúdios Musicais na Europa
Há mais de 10 dias que 500 músicos no Porto foram despejados do seu espaço de trabalho (mais de 100 salas de ensaio no Centro Comercial STOP, no centro da cidade), que tem sido chamado o maior complexo DIY de Estúdios na Europa.
Indignados, convocaram uma manifestação na qual compareceram milhares de pessoas, artistas e agentes culturais, no Porto e em Lisboa, reconhecendo a importância desta comunidade para a cultura em Portugal.
A época alta dos concertos é no verão, e a maioria destes profissionais precisa do seu espaço de trabalho para se preparar, guardar os seus materiais, etc. O autarca do Porto, que também é o vereador da cultura da cidade, não compreende a disrupção que está a causar na vida de centenas de trabalhadores e das suas famílias, mas também, na actividade cultural da comunidade em geral.
O Porto sofreu bastantes alterações nos anos recentes da sua gestão política, sendo descaracterizado perdendo milhares de habitantes devido à crise habitacional. Além disso, o seu executivo é investigado por actividades de especulação imobiliária e favorecimento de interesses económicos.
Agora, o número incontável de criadores e técnicos que passaram pelo Centro Comercial STOP nas últimas décadas unem esforços com estes 500 músicos e, em uníssono com a sua vizinhança e cidade, não irão permitir ser convertidos em novas vítimas da ambição e do lucro.
Mais de 7000 pessoas marcharam hoje em defesa da cultura quando o STOP, um espaço de trabalho coletivo no Porto, que serve 500 artistas, foi despejado no dia 18 de julho. Os meios de comunicação oficiais (e a polícia) referiram 1,5 mil pessoas, mas a organização acredita que estivemos entre 5 a 7 mil pessoas na rua. Áudio: Reportagem do dia do despejo. O caos rebentou no início desta semana, quando uma operação policial que faz lembrar as da “guerra contra a droga”, muito mais vasta e mortífera, com mais de 200 “operações” nos últimos meses, com gendarmaria fortemente armada, reprime os bairros da cidade. Eu estava claramente muito entusiasmado, por isso tomem isto como um romance de ficção científica! 🙂 Às 22:30, a polícia queria reabrir a rua. As pessoas estavam claramente na rua, por isso a polícia enviou 8 motos e depois veio um camião de limpeza de lixo. As pessoas estavam calmas, mas disseram claramente que, de certa forma, não estavam a gostar. A cidade é nossa”, “O Porto é nosso”, “A cidade é nossa”. Este despejo forçado, do Centro Comercial Stop, provocou ondas de choque em toda a região. Devido à cobertura mediática, a Câmara Municipal está a recuar, enquanto experimenta novas formas de controlo social. Entretanto, a cidade está num estado de guerra. As pessoas escrevem: “A cidade é nossa nos muros”. Sobre alguns papéis em chamas na sede da polícia: (esta parte é mais emocional do que fiável, mas foi divertido!) Quanto a tudo o que possa ser relatado como fogo, não houve fogo, os bombeiros foram a um ar condicionado e aplicaram uma lata vermelha de corta-fogo durante 7 segundos. depois o comitivo do buraco foi-se embora. a polícia parecia “não estar a par” da situação. É muito importante notar que não foi apresentado nenhum motivo aparente para que qualquer um destes “organismos” públicos se tenha comportado desta forma… Os bombeiros foram colocados em alerta máximo pelos políticos, numa reunião que ocorreu precisamente durante o protesto, devido ao “risco de incêndio” do STOP, mas acabaram por se dirigir, à meia-noite, numa enorme operação de primeira resposta, para a esquadra da polícia… A esquadra da polícia (que tinha um pequeno incêndio na varanda, aparentemente foram atirados alguns papéis) mas o motivo de uma intervenção tão grande é que a Câmara Municipal, ao tentar desviar a nossa capacidade de ver que estão de facto a fazer estas acções, como vender todo o bairro, num “concurso” de “ideias” e aceitar uma má ideia, de entre apenas três(!)?(!) colocou os bombeiros em alerta máximo, nesse mesmo dia. Porque há anos que dizem que o STOP é propenso a incêndios e querem “evitar uma catástrofe”. Por isso, foi muito divertido quando três enormes camiões dos bombeiros e várias ambulâncias vieram invadir a esquadra! Quanto à razão pela qual isto está a acontecer, chama-se especulação, influência do tráfego e muito dinheiro. Os artistas são a ponta do iceberg, no que pode muito bem tornar-se um enorme escândalo na cidade. Os planos são públicos, querem vender o bairro por mais de 45 milhões de euros, foi aprovado um projeto de arquitetura. Esperavam que os artistas aceitassem ser expulsos, mas a luta ainda agora começou. Já se registou uma série de escândalos, com o presidente de uma das associações de artistas a ser acusado de vender os artistas ao poder. Tudo faz parte de um esquema maior para concretizar o enorme projeto de milhões de euros e expulsar os punks.
